Muzungu!!

One of the things that I looked forward to most about living in Kasese was the ready access we’d have to the Ruwenzori Mountains. So, of course, I was thrilled when Samson offered to take us hiking on our first day in the village.

Before we made it to the mountains, though, our van's breaks needed some TLC. We stopped at a local shop where a crew got to work and, per usual, everyone took an interest in the four unfamiliar Muzungu—a Swahili word used often here meaning, “white person.” The term is not derogatory in the slightest and is actually received with more of an endearing quality than you’d expect. For me, hearing “Muzungu” makes me feel welcome and unfailingly invokes a smile or a laugh.

While we waited to embark on our hike, three young boys approached our car window. We chatted a bit and learned that they would all be beginning a new school term soon and would be in Top Class, P2, and P3. With little else to do, we decided to show them how Americans dance—or, at least, how the four of us like to dance. With Samson’s CD playing in the background, this quickly escalated into an all-out Muzungu-style dance party.

Learning the Sprinkler

What started as a few friends, quickly turned into ten, and soon we were the ones learning new moves.

Here are most of the movers and shakers showing their Wisco love.

At long last, our ride was ready. So, we bade our farewells and made our way to the mountains.

Props to our little van (and Samson’s expert driving)
for traversing such rough terrain.

Water break complete with a beautiful view.

Ange crossing one of many bridges along the trail.

Goats on goat in Uganda.

Mountainside football pitch.

Overall, a successful first day in the mountains.

Until next time!
